QLD:Train to operate despite boy's fall

A Sunlander passenger train will remain in operation despite a five-year-old boy falling
from one of its carriages in far north Queensland.

Queensland Rail is investigating whether the boy could have opened a door on the Cairns-bound
train last night.

The child was found by a passing motorist near the train tracks between Deeral and
Aloomba, about 30 kilometres south of Cairns, and was treated in Cairns Base Hospital
for a cut to his head and bruising.

Queensland Rail spokeswoman CATHY HEFFERNAN says she can't explain how the boy fell
out of the door, given it has a double mechanism, which requires an adult to open it with
two hands.

Ms Heffernan says the carriage the boy fell from has been removed from service to be examined.

The five-year-old was travelling with his mother and three siblings from Brisbane to Cairns.
