Qld: Men three times more likely to drown on public holiday
A study shows men are three times more likely to drown on a public holiday than on a weekday.
The Royal Life Saving drowning report reveals 80 per cent of the 250 Australians who
drowned in the nation's waterways last year were men.
Alcohol was a factor in 20 per cent of the drownings.
Based on an analysis of last year's statistics, the report also reveals men aged 15-54
are 300 per cent more likely to drown on a public holiday than a weekday.
The Royal Life Saving Society of Australia has seized on the findings to warn people,
particularly men, of combining alcohol, swimming and holidays.
