Fed: Proposed ABC Telstra deal

Telstra's proposed $67.5 million on-line content deal with the ABC will give it exclusive
internet rights to sports news and any future on-line ABC financial news service.

Telstra online services director JOHN ROLLAND says the deal will give Telstra five-year
exclusive rights to wireless internet transmission for sports and finance news.

He says the ABC doesn't currently have an on-line financial news service, but the proposed
heads of agreement covers that eventuality.

The agreement also provides for a share of any future advertising revenue for the ABC.

Mr HOLLAND says other aspects of the five-year deal are non-exclusive.

Telstra will not have rights to first dissemination of ABC services, and won't be allowed
to leave out stories at its discretion.

For co-productions, which won't make up more than 25 per cent of the annual $13 million
fee, the ABC will have right of veto.
